Modal split in a competitive system of transit and highway with heterogeneous users

Abstract:Consider a competitive transportation system with a mass transit parallel to a bottleneck-constrained road way, all commuters who are differentiated by their value of time and arrival early/late penalty, choose one mode to finish their traveling from residential area to workplace. We investigate the mode choice problem under three combinations of transit fare and road toll. Numerical results show the impacts of travel demand and its composition on modal split and individual travel cost.
